About Funtoo

My name is Daniel Robbins, and on this page, I hope to give you some idea of what Funtoo is about. Around late 1999, I created the Gentoo Linux operating system, and led its development and the management of its large and rapidly-growing development team through April 25, 2004.

Since then, I've done quite a few other things. Some of the things I've done have been quite a bit of fun. But I've found that I miss working on Gentoo development. Now, I don't miss the politics of Gentoo. I don't necessarily want to return to be the Chief Architect of the Gentoo project as it exists today. But I do like Gentoo Linux itself. I created Gentoo, care about its future, and want to continue to help make it better. So although I have no official connection to the official Gentoo project today, as the creator of Gentoo, I do care very much about Gentoo as a technology, and the larger free software community that surrounds Gentoo.

Funtoo Primary Goals

Funtoo is a project I created to provide myself with an outlet to work on Gentoo and other interesting technical projects. I wanted to create an environment where I could work on Gentoo development relatively independently so that my work could be more compatible with my personal life.

Now, I have a lot of technical goals for Funtoo, but the primary goal of Funtoo as a free software project is to create an environment where I can happily work on Gentoo-related and non-Gentoo-related technical efforts in a way that's compatible with my personal life, and have it be fun, too. In the sense, the name Funtoo is sort of a play on words on Gentoo, where Funtoo is sort of my own personal Gentoo that's also fun :)

While the technical goals of Funtoo will change over time, the primary goal of Funtoo to be a enjoyable personal outlet to satisfy own personal desire to create and innovate will remain constant.
